Heat a large skillet over medium heat, add the olive oil and butter.
Add the sliced onions and sauté them for about 15-20 minutes, or until they become caramelized and brown.
Stir occasionally until they reach a deep golden brown color.
Pour in the beef broth, and simmer for another 10-15 minutes until the liquid has mostly evaporated.
Season the caramelized onions with salt and pepper to taste. Set aside.
Prepare the Garlic Sauce:
In a large tall mixer base, mix garlic and egg until foamy. Then keep mixing while carefully adding olive oil until a creamy texture forms.
Set aside.
Grill the Burgers:
Preheat your grill or stovetop grill pan to medium-high heat.
Season ground beef with spices and divide the ground beef into 4 equal portions and form them into burger patties.
Grill the burger patties to your desired level of doneness, typically 5 minutes per side for medium-rare. During the last minute of cooking, add a portion of the caramelized onion mixture and some Gruyère cheese on top of each patty. Cover the grill to allow the cheese to melt.
Assemble the Burgers:
Spread a generous amount of the garlic sauce on the bottom half of each bun.
Place the French Onion Burger on top of the sauce, arugula and then top with the other half of the bun.
Serve your French Onion Burger with fries, and enjoy!
