HOW TO MAKE FRENCH ONION BURGERS
- Make the French Onion Topping:
- Heat a large skillet over medium heat, add the olive oil and butter.
- Add the sliced onions and sauté them for about 15-20 minutes, or until they become caramelized and brown.
- Stir occasionally until they reach a deep golden brown color.
- Pour in the beef broth, and simmer for another 10-15 minutes until the liquid has mostly evaporated.
- Season the caramelized onions with salt and pepper to taste. Set aside.
- Prepare the Garlic Sauce:
- In a large tall mixer base, mix garlic and egg until foamy. Then keep mixing while carefully adding olive oil until a creamy texture forms.
- Set aside
- Grill the Burgers:
- Preheat your grill or stovetop grill pan to medium-high heat.
- Season ground beef with spices and divide the ground beef into 4 equal portions and form them into burger patties.
- Grill the burger patties to your desired level of doneness, typically 5 minutes per side for medium-rare. During the last minute of cooking, add a portion of the caramelized onion mixture and some Gruyère cheese on top of each patty. Cover the grill to allow the cheese to melt.
- Assemble the Burgers:
- Spread a generous amount of the garlic sauce on the bottom half of each bun.
- Place the French Onion Burger on top of the sauce, arugula and then top with the other half of the bun.
- Serve your French Onion Burger with fries, and enjoy!
TIPS FOR SUCCESS
- Caramelizing onions takes time, so be patient and allow them to cook slowly until they reach a deep golden brown color. Stir occasionally to prevent burning.
- Season the burger patties with your preferred spices to enhance their flavor. Salt and pepper are commonly used, but feel free to add other seasonings according to your taste.
- Adding the caramelized onion mixture and Gruyère cheese to the burger patties during the last minute of grilling allows the cheese to melt and the flavors to blend together.
- The garlic sauce can be prepared in advance and stored in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 2 days (don’t use it after this time as it contains raw egg).
- Customize your burger by adding additional toppings such as tomato slices, pickles, or bacon, if desired.
- Serve the French Onion Burger with a side of fries or a salad for a complete meal.

What Is The Best Ground Beef To Use?
We like to use 85% lean ground beef for cheeseburgers. It has enough fat to give the burgers lots of flavor without them being too greasy. If you like juicy burgers, I wouldn’t suggest using leaner ground beef.
