What is dirt pudding made of?

Dirt pudding is usually made of instant pudding mix (chocolate or vanilla), Oreo cookie crumbs, milk, and Cool Whip or whipped topping. Then it’s topped with gummy worms, more Oreo cookies, some fun Halloween edibles, such as googly eyes, candy corn, etc. You can customize it with your favorite toppings and make it look more creepy with some edible headstone toppers.

Spoon another layer of Oreo cookies and another layer of the pudding mixture.

Top each cup with a generous sprinkle of the chocolate sprinkles to create a “dirt” layer.

To make the monster cookies, press two candy eyes onto each cookie, using a small amount of frosting ( or melted chocolate if you have, to hold them in place). Here you can use any toppings and candies you prefer.

dirt pudding cups with worms

Gently press the monster cookies and a few additional gummy worms into the top of the pudding cups, so that they are partially buried in the “dirt.”

Refrigerate the Dirt Pudding Cups for at least 1 hour before serving to allow the pudding to set.

TIPS & SUGGESTIONS

  • For a more festive presentation, you can serve the Dirt Pudding Cups in small plastic cups or terracotta pots, which will give the appearance of small flower pots.
  • You can use other types of cookies instead of Oreos, such as graham crackers or chocolate chip cookies.
  • For a healthier option, you can use vanilla Greek yogurt instead of Cool Whip.
  • If you don’t have candy eyes, you can use mini marshmallows or chocolate chips as a substitute.
  • Instead of chocolate pudding mix, you can use vanilla or butterscotch pudding mix for a different flavor.
  • Instead of Cool Whip, you can use whipped cream or make your own whipped cream by whipping heavy cream and sugar together.

RECIPE FAQ’S

How Long Are They Good For?

These pudding cups are good for up to 2-3 days. You just need to cover up them tightly with plastic wrap or aluminium foil and place them in the fridge. Cookie crumbs may soften the longer they sit in the refrigerator and gummy worms will harden. If you really need to make them ahead, you can make the chocolate pudding mix and prepare Oreo crumbs and gummy worms, and whip everything together right before serving.
